The problem
The feature you asked for in March is still "nearly there" in June. Not because anyone is slacking. Writing software by hand is slow, and the interesting parts are often buried under hours of routine work.
The obvious answer is more people, but that has its own problem. A new developer spends their first week or two getting set up: installing things, chasing settings, working out which of the three config files is the real one. And every question they have pulls your one experienced person away from their own work. For a while, adding someone makes the whole team slower.
What we do
AI-assisted coding
We use AI tools to write code, and it's a significant speed-up. Routine work that used to take a day takes an hour. Features get to market sooner, and work that wasn't worth the time before becomes worth doing.
What makes this safe is everything else in this series. Code written with AI goes through exactly the same automated tests and code checks as code written by hand, and it's reviewed by an experienced developer who understands your system. The AI is an amplifier for that developer, not a replacement for the guardrails. Teams that skip the guardrails and just generate more code faster tend to end up slower, drowning in review. We've measured this on real projects, and it's not close.
Dev environments
Everything a developer needs to work on your system is scripted. Set up your access keys, run one command, and about five minutes later you have a complete, working copy of the system on your machine.
There's no setup week, no tribal knowledge, and no experienced person being interrupted. Every developer's environment is identical, and it matches what runs on the live servers, so "it works on my machine" stops being a sentence anyone needs to say.
It's a big part of why a new developer can release a change on their first day. One of ours did.
What it means for you
Work gets done faster without the quality dropping. Bringing in extra help actually helps, from day one. And the cost of trying something is low enough that ideas which would have stayed on the wish list get built.
